The strategy of the game is driven by the number of unique Action and Treasure cards. These cards, all with their exquisite drawings and unique pirate references, represent the tools and myths exhibited during the pirate age.
Favorite Action Cards
Gamble
This card exemplifies the risk all pirates must take to command the seas. It is a simple risk, rolling one die against an opponent, with the potential for large gains. Given the probability to win is equal for you and the opponent you are gambling, when and how you use the card is critical. The targeted pirate must have a significant number of Coin cards in their Coffer to be advantageous. In addition, the Treasure card, Calypso, can push the probability in your favor. Finally, you should consider cards that have already been played, e.g. Hurricane, and the other Action cards in your hand, i.e. a Brigantine to utilize your winnings immediately or Belay(s) for protection.
Belay
The only card that can be played off turn creates endless applications. Belay is a powerful command to stop the action of your opposing pirates. The card provides you the ability to sabotage opponent's turns or protect your cards against attacks. Will you stop an opponent from fattening their Coffer? Will you protect your Duffle? Will you safeguard your Coffer? With the many possibilities, you must analyze your position in the game. Are you leading and will likely be targeted by opposing pirates? Do you have a large value Coin card or powerful Action cards? Is the leader playing a Depth Diver to grab a Schooner? Determining the answer to the questions will help you take control over your opposing pirates.
Favorite Treasure Cards
Visit the Shaman
As visualized in the card's stunning design, a Shaman was known to walk the line between the physical and spiritual world. Harnessing the Shaman's mystical powers will enlighten your card selections. When played correctly, the Shaman has the power to change the tides of the game. Be cautious however, once other pirates have seen you speak with the Shaman, they will be suspicious of your intentions. It is best to utilize the cards selected as quickly as possible.
Captain's Caw
The parrot was not only a majestic sight in the Caribbean but also faithful pirate companion. A true Swashbuckler would use the Captain's Caw to bring elegance to their adventure. A significant advantage awaits its owner, allowing you to play an additional Action card on your turn. By combining an additional Action card to your attack, it increases your strategic options. Imagine collecting Coins with an Admirals Tax and Treasure Chest and then being able to play a Brigantine or Schooner! With the Captain's Caw, you can strategize a turn that will have your opponents marvel at the power of the ultimate pirate companion.
